Quick Answer
In Rockville the commute matters more than the driveway. Three things move your number.

One profile, priced across the panel
Progressive, GEICO, Safeco, Liberty Mutual, and non-standard markets including Bristol West and The General, all quoted on matching limits.
The PIP waiver, priced both ways
We quote your policy with the $2,500 PIP and without it, so you see what the waiver is worth before you sign the Commissioner's form.
UM limits that follow your liability
UM cannot be declined in Maryland and must match liability, so raising one raises both. We show you what each limit step costs first.
Commute mileage rated honestly
Daily I-270 driver or Red Line rider, we report your real annual mileage and place you in the tier that fits it.
Maryland is at-fault, and its rules are more layered than most. Liability is flat. PIP must be offered but can be waived in writing. Uninsured motorist coverage is mandatory and tied to your liability limits.
| Coverage | MD Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily Injury Liability | $30,000 / $60,000 | $100,000 / $300,000 |
| Property Damage Liability | $15,000 | $100,000 |
| Personal Injury Protection (PIP) | $2,500 must be offered, waivable in writing | Keep it unless the waiver is priced and understood |
| Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist | Required at your liability limits, cannot be waived | Rises automatically when you raise liability |
| Collision & Comprehensive | Not required by law | Required if the car is financed or leased |
| Proof of Insurance | Verified electronically by the Maryland MVA | Maintain continuous coverage, no gaps |
Requirements per Maryland Insurance Code Sections 19-505 and 19-509. State minimums are the legal floor, not a coverage recommendation. At $30,000 per person, one serious injury claim on I-270 can exceed them.
Maryland has the second-longest average commute in the United States at 31.5 minutes one-way, behind only New York, per Census Bureau American Community Survey figures reported in late 2025. Rockville sits on the spine of it. I-270 carries Montgomery County down to the Beltway, and the run to downtown DC is roughly 18 to 20 miles: about 30 minutes off-peak, and 30 to 60 once traffic builds between 7 and 9 in the morning and 4 and 6 in the evening.
That exposure is growing again. The share of Maryland workers who are hybrid or fully remote fell from 34 percent in 2023 to 27 percent in 2024, so close to three-quarters are back in the car. More miles at the worst hours is what carriers price for.
Uninsured motorist coverage earns its keep
About 15.1 percent of Maryland drivers were uninsured per Insurance Information Institute data for 2022. On a corridor this dense, the UM coverage Maryland will not let you waive is the one most likely to respond.
Low mileage is worth asking about
Red Line service at Rockville and Shady Grove means plenty of households drive far less than a carrier assumes. We place that in a low-mileage or pleasure-use tier instead.
Rockville covers 20850, 20851, 20852, and 20853, and rates are not uniform across them. Note that 20852 spans both Rockville and North Bethesda addresses. We also write the surrounding Montgomery County communities along the I-270 and Red Line corridors.

The questions Montgomery County drivers ask us most often.
Maryland requires 30/60/15 liability: $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage. Your insurer must also offer at least $2,500 in Personal Injury Protection, which you may waive in writing, and must include Uninsured Motorist coverage at your liability limits, which you may not waive. Maryland is an at-fault state.
No, and this is the most misunderstood point in Maryland auto insurance. Section 19-505 requires the insurer to offer at least $2,500 in Personal Injury Protection. It does not require you to buy it. You may decline PIP by signing a waiver on the form prescribed by the Maryland Insurance Commissioner. PIP pays medical bills and lost wages regardless of fault, so we price the policy both ways before you sign.
No. Under Section 19-509, Uninsured Motorist coverage is mandatory at limits equal to your liability limits. You cannot decline it or buy it lower, so raising liability automatically raises UM. With roughly 15.1 percent of Maryland drivers uninsured per Insurance Information Institute data for 2022, that mandate does real work on I-270.
Maryland is an at-fault state. The driver who causes the crash is responsible for the other party's injuries and property damage through their liability coverage. The waivable PIP offer sits on top of that as optional first-party medical coverage, and the required Uninsured Motorist coverage responds when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough of it.
MoneyGeek's 2026 rate analysis puts Rockville full coverage at roughly $148 per month and minimum coverage at roughly $85. That is essentially the Maryland average, a hair below the statewide $150 full, around $1,802 a year, and $86 minimum. Nearby Gaithersburg averages about $145 full. Maryland runs roughly 21 percent above the national average of about $124, so a Rockville quote near the state figure is normal.
Yes, more than most drivers expect. Maryland has the second-longest average commute in the country at 31.5 minutes one-way, behind only New York, per Census Bureau American Community Survey figures reported in late 2025. Rockville to downtown DC is roughly 18 to 20 miles, about 30 minutes off-peak and 30 to 60 when I-270 and I-495 load up. Carriers rate annual mileage and commute classification, so your real daily drive is a rating input.
It can, if someone asks. Red Line service at Rockville and Shady Grove means many Montgomery County households drive far fewer annual miles than a carrier assumes by default. Low mileage feeds low-mileage tiers, pleasure-use classification instead of commute-use, and usage-based programs where a carrier offers one. The saving only appears if the mileage is reported and rated correctly.
We write Rockville's own ZIP codes, 20850, 20851, 20852, and 20853, plus the surrounding Montgomery County communities: Derwood and Shady Grove at 20855, Potomac at 20854, Gaithersburg at 20877 and 20878, Bethesda at 20814, Kensington at 20895, and Silver Spring at 20910. Rates vary between them, so quote your exact ZIP.
Faster by phone than by form. Call 717-229-5115 during business hours and we compare carriers with you while you are on the line. Submit the online request and we come back within 1 hour, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm ET. Have your driver's license, vehicle VIN, and current declarations page ready. Non-standard records, such as a recent DUI or an SR-22 filing, may need an extra business day for underwriting review.
