Quick Answer
Is boat insurance required in Tennessee? No. TWRA regulates registration and boater education, not insurance. Nashville marinas commonly require liability coverage for a slip, and lenders typically require hull coverage on a financed boat. Call 717-229-5115 and we quote to the limits your slip agreement or loan lists.

Nashville boaters split time between two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoirs, and each lake shapes the policy a little differently.
Build the policy from the pieces you need. Each card ties a coverage to a risk you meet on Middle Tennessee water.
Liability
Pays when you injure someone or damage another boat or dock, and that includes the friends riding with you. A Percy Priest slip agreement usually names this limit, so we quote to it.
Hull: agreed value vs. actual cash value
With agreed value, the total-loss payout is settled when the policy begins. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation at the time of the loss. We quote both on your boat so you can see what the stronger option costs.
Uninsured boater
Tennessee does not require boat insurance, so the operator who hits you at a busy launch may have none. This covers injuries to you and your passengers when that happens.
Towing and on-water assistance
Old Hickory stretches far up the Cumberland River. If the motor quits miles from your ramp, this pays for the tow back instead of leaving you to flag down help.
Fuel spill liability
Covers cleanup and related claims when fuel or oil leaks from your boat. Around a marina fuel dock with neighbors on every side, that matters.
Trailer
Protects the trailer you back down one of Old Hickory's many public ramps. Some policies build it in and others add it, so we confirm it is on your quote.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) sets who can operate your boat and which boats must be registered. Carriers ask about both when we quote.

Questions Percy Priest and Old Hickory boaters ask us most.
Tennessee law does not require insurance on a recreational boat. TWRA's rules cover registration and boater education instead. Coverage still tends to be required in practice: a marina slip on Percy Priest Lake or Old Hickory Lake commonly comes with a liability minimum, and a lender typically requires hull coverage on a financed boat. We quote to the exact figures in your slip agreement or loan.
Progressive says its average Tennessee boat policy cost $427.17 a year for policies covering one watercraft between December 2024 and November 2025. Your Nashville price may come in higher or lower depending on the boat's value and horsepower, where you keep it, who operates it, and your claims history. Call 717-229-5115 to price your boat with Progressive, Liberty Mutual (formerly Safeco), National General, and Foremost.
TWRA requires Tennessee residents born after January 1, 1989 to pass a boating safety exam before operating a vessel with more than 8.5 horsepower, and the TWRA wallet card must be on your person while you operate. The card is not required if an adult 18 or older, born before January 1, 1989, is aboard and able to take immediate control. Visitors born after that date can use a NASBLA-approved certificate.
Yes. TWRA requires every vessel powered by a motor, trolling motor, or sail to be registered, while boats powered only by paddles or oars are exempt. That means a kayak with a trolling motor needs registration. For a boat bought from a private seller, a Tennessee County Clerk certifies the application, and initial registration requires proof that sales tax was paid.
Marinas commonly make proof of liability coverage a condition of renting a slip, and some ask to be named on your policy. Requirements differ from marina to marina, so bring your slip agreement when you call. We set the liability limit and policy wording to match it so the marina office accepts your certificate.
Usually only in a limited way. Many homeowners policies cap coverage for small boats or leave out on-water liability, which is the part that pays when a guest gets hurt or you hit another boat. A standalone boat policy covers the hull and on-water liability directly, and we can quote it next to your home policy so you see whether a bundle saves money.
For boats we compare Progressive, Liberty Mutual, National General, and Foremost. Each one prices a Nashville boat differently based on its value, storage, and operators, so we run the carriers that fit and show price and coverage together. We can also bundle the boat with your Tennessee auto or home insurance.
