Louisville, KY
Barge traffic, river current, and drift make the Ohio a tougher place to boat than a quiet lake. Dragon Insurance is an independent agency licensed in Kentucky, and we quote Louisville boats across Progressive, Liberty Mutual, National General, and Foremost in one call.

Quick Answer
No. Kentucky law does not require boat insurance. Louisville marinas commonly require liability coverage for a slip, and boat lenders require hull coverage until the loan is paid off.

Louisville boating happens on a working river, and that changes what your policy has to handle compared with a quiet lake.
Pick the pieces that fit how you use the river. We price each one across our boat carriers so you can see the difference before you buy.
Liability
Pays for injuries and damage you cause to other people, guests included. Near the riverfront docks, one hard wake into a moored boat can turn into a claim against you.
Hull: agreed value vs. actual cash value
Agreed value pays the amount set when the policy starts on a covered total loss, minus the deductible. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation first. Owners with newer boats or loans usually want agreed value.
Uninsured boater
Kentucky does not require boat insurance, so the operator who hits you may carry none. This pays for injuries to you and your passengers when the at-fault boater cannot.
Towing and on-water assistance
A dead battery or a fouled prop in river current is a different problem than on a still lake. Towing coverage gets you back to the ramp before the current pushes you somewhere worse.
Fuel spill liability
Covers cleanup costs and related claims if fuel or oil leaks from your boat. On a river that also carries commercial traffic, a spill draws attention fast.
Trailer
Covers damage to the trailer you tow to the launch. Some policies include it and others add it, so we confirm it is on your quote before you hitch up.

What Louisville boat owners ask us before they buy.
No Kentucky law requires boat insurance. The requirement usually comes from someone else: a Louisville-area marina asking for liability before it rents you a slip, or a lender asking for hull coverage until the boat loan is paid off. We quote policies that meet those conditions and send proof straight to the marina or lender.
Progressive reports that its average Kentucky boat policy cost $393.78 a year in 2025, based on policies covering one watercraft from December 2024 through November 2025. Your own premium can run higher or lower depending on the boat's value, engine size, where you keep it, and your boating history. Call 717-229-5115 and we price your boat across Progressive, Liberty Mutual (formerly Safeco), National General, and Foremost.
Hull coverage generally pays for sudden damage from striking a submerged object, such as a log carried down the Ohio after heavy rain, subject to your deductible and policy terms. Wear, rot, and gradual damage are typically excluded. We confirm how each carrier handles submerged-object claims before you pick a policy.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources says operators must be at least 12 to run a motorboat or personal watercraft of 10 horsepower or more on public waters, and 12 to 17 year olds operating without an adult aboard need a boater education card or an approved course certificate. Operators 18 and older do not need the card under Kentucky law. List every operator on your quote either way, since carriers price the people who drive the boat.
Kentucky motorboat registrations and transfers are handled by the County Clerk's Office, so Louisville owners register through the Jefferson County Clerk or the clerk in the county where the boat is docked. Every motorboat on Kentucky waters must be numbered and currently registered, and renewals come due April 30. Registration proves ownership; it does not pay for damage or injuries.
Yes. We quote pontoons, bass boats, runabouts, cruisers, and personal watercraft for Louisville and Jefferson County owners. Have the year, make, length, engine horsepower, and the name of everyone who drives it ready when you call, since that is what lets us price it accurately on the first call.
