Multi-state families face unique bundling challenges. Learn how to combine home and auto insurance across states and find carriers that write in all your locations.
If your family owns or rents in more than one state or you split time between a primary home and a vacation property bundling your insurance can be surprisingly complicated. Here is what to know before you combine policies.
Bundling means placing two or more policies with the same carrier typically auto plus home or auto plus renters. Most carriers offer a multi-policy discount of 5 to 20 percent when you bundle. You also simplify your billing and renewal process by dealing with one company. For most families, this is a straightforward win.
Not every carrier is licensed in every state. If you own a home in Pennsylvania and a vacation property in Tennessee, you may not be able to bundle with the same carrier because some carriers do not write home policies in all the states you need. This is where comparing across many carriers becomes critical. A carrier that writes in all your states can offer a true bundle; one that does not forces you to split policies and lose the discount.
Start by identifying a carrier that writes in all states where you have property. Ask specifically which states they write home and auto in not just whether they are licensed there. Compare bundled versus unbundled rates before deciding sometimes two separate carriers beat the bundled rate from one. Always compare deductibles and coverage limits, not just the monthly premium.
Bundling is not always the best answer. If your home is in a high-risk area like a coastal flood zone or a hail-prone region of Texas the carrier that offers the best rate on your auto may price your home very high or decline to write it at all. In those cases, using separate carriers optimized for each risk can produce a lower total premium than forcing a bundle.
